*Updated: Nabisco Cinnamon Donut Chips Ahoy! are back on shelves for 2017! This review was originally prepared on August 25, 2016 when the cookies first debuted. Please find our review republished below.
Nabisco has picked a fall flavor for the Chips Ahoy! line, and it ain’t pumpkin – it’s cinnamon. The company recently rolled out Cinnamon Sugar Chips Ahoy! Thins, the brand’s first foray into cinnamon. Results were awesome; they tasted like churros. Whenever you can successfully flavor a cookie with another dessert entirely, you’re doing something right by Junk Banter.
Nabisco is doubling down on cinnamon with their latest Chips Ahoy! release. We’ll be doing some doubling ourselves because these new cookies are of the not-Thin variety. If the name of the game is “Not Being Thin,” here’s how you play: pair cinnamon with something worse for you than sugar alone… choose a dessert even worse for you than churros..
Flavor your cookies with donuts.
Lord, Almighty… the day has finally arrived. Nabisco Cinnamon Donut Chips Ahoy! cookies were leaked in June by some . The new cookies are available for a limited time only, presumably through fall if the autumn leaves on the package are an indicator.
The link to fall is evidenced in another way. These cookies contain both cinnamon & apple donut flavored chips, a nod to the apple cider donuts synonymous with the season. I’m not sure why they only referenced Cinnamon Donut in the title, but does it really matter? You only read “donut” before committing to buy.
Let’s read a little deeper now that you’re home and ate six. “Cinnamon and Apple Donut Flavored Chips.” Did you catch it? The chips aren’t just cinnamon, nor are they just apple. They’re cinnamon & apple donut flavored chips. These donut flavored cookies contain donut flavored chips.
I’m gonna need bigger Cookies Pants.
Opening the package gave me a strong whiff of cinnamon, a faint burst of apple, and just the right amount of chemicals.
The great news is that these donut flavored cookies do, in fact, taste like donuts. The cookies are soft & floury – chewy but with good heft. The cinnamon flavor is pervasive without being overpowering – a problem present in the S’mores Chips Ahoy! cookies. The flavor profile has a sweet “creaminess” to it that I associate with powdered sugar. They taste more like Cinnamon Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts and not traditional apple cider donuts with raised cinnamon sugar. In fact, the apple doesn’t come through at all – the chips are pretty useless.
Here’s the interesting thing though. Cinnamon Donut Chips Ahoy! taste so much like powdered cinnamon donuts that I struggle to grasp their utility. They’re very one-dimensional, and I can’t say that I prefer them over their donut alternative. Even the textures feel redundant… soft, chewy, doughy. The only difference is that these have a thick chew instead of a fluffy chew. I enjoyed the five I ate during the review, but I don’t need to eat them ever again. I’m not saying I won’t or that I didn’t just eat a sixth, but I don’t need to.
My advice to Nabisco: you just showed me you can donuts well, but adding cinnamon to cookies is playing it safe. Come back at me with a Boston Cream Donut Chewy Chips Ahoy! in the filled variety. Make me outgrow those Cookies Pants and upgrade to Donut Pants.

How about a jelly donut chips ahoy? Cookie dough chips ahoy
All fine by me!
Well their utility is that most people feel guilty eating 5 doughnuts, but don’t necessarily bat as much of an eye at eating 5 cookies. Well, I know I don’t… 2 doughnuts is my shame maximum in 1 sitting, for cookies at least 4 but more than that if we’re being honest. But I live alone, where there is no one to judge my cookie consumption.
Btw I really like your reviews, your writing is very amusing. If you need a guest writer or anything, give me a shout!
Two words for you, Elise: Mini donuts. I find these largely similar to Hostess/Tastykake cinnamon mini donuts in the bakery aisle. Just a little more artificial. It’s fun to experience this flavor as a cookie once, but the novelty wore off quickly for me.
And thanks for the feedback on the site! I’m open to more writers in the future but haven’t gotten myself quite there yet. Shoot me an e-mail at junkbanter@gmail.com and we can talk.
I’ve tried these cookies and they are delicious.. However, one must properly read the label on the packaging that says “Artificially Flavored”.. That’s my only turn off. I’m not sure if it’s completely artificially flavored, but I’m assuming so.
However, they’re still damn good.
I loved these! Thrilled that they’re back!
I was pleasantly surprised to see their return! Had no idea they were set for an encore.
