I’m just gonna come out and say it: back-to-school season really bites the big one. You have to buy new clothes because I got fatter, shop for things like PENCILS, and try to get your head out of the toilet every time I cross path with a senior (and some freshmen, too). All for what, an education that won’t even yield me a job better than Stupid Junk Food Blogger?
There’s only ONE THING I looked forward to about schooling, and it’s the lunchbox PB&J sandwich.
? Welcome back, bitches! ?
FINALLY with these new Nabisco PB&J Oreos, exclusive to Kroger-owned stores.
This is something of a dream flavor for me. PB&J sandwiches and Oreos were best friends in my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lunchbox for most of my childhood and some of my adulthood. Peanut Butter Oreos have also been a staple for years, so where that jelly been hidin’ at all this time?
It’s kind of hard to believe that jelly’s Oreo Debut occurred in doughnut form rather than in sandwich form, until you consider that the target demographic probably uses doughnuts as bread anyway.
PB&J Oreos smell of fake peanut butter and fake jelly, which they are.
I tried the peanut butter creme first and wasn’t surprised when it tasted just like the creme in Peanut Butter Oreos. It’s modestly artificial but also modestly genuine – right in the middle of the road on its peanut butteriness. It’s not as sweet as the PB in say, a Reese’s Cup, but it’s effective for its purpose.
The jelly creme is absolutely delicious. I’m 99% certain it’s the same creme in Jelly Donut Oreos, but it really comes to life when you get this quantity to enjoy instead of just a single dollop in the center. It’s a little jammy, a little tart, and pleasantly fruity. Please don’t tell any seniors how excited I get about cookies.
I can hear you asking “what flavor jelly did they go with?”, so I’ve got the answer for you: I don’t know. It’s probably closest to raspberry, though I think it hints at strawberry too, and it looks an awful lot like grape. Maybe it’s yumberry jelly? It doesn’t matter – it tastes great on a wafer.
As a whole, PB&J Oreos are every bit as good as I imagined them to be.
The peanut butter and jelly cremes combine beautifully. The balance is just right as neither dominates the other, and all elements come through along with the wafer. The peanut butter creme on the golden wafer ends up tasting a lot like a Nutter Butter (same company). And while that might not be a brand new experience, the addition of the bright jelly creme makes it an experience worth having.
A minor criticism: I usually take my PB&J with the crust on. This one doesn’t even have bread.
Regardless, PB&J Oreos are incredibly playful cookies that will remind you of your childhood. Have you ever spread PB&J on crackers? It’s even better on cookies. They’re such better back-to-school cookies than those stupid Back-to-School Oreos that taunt you with phrases like “Welcome Back!” (worst limited edition flavor of all time). While I don’t have to worry about school anymore because I’m a man now (barely), I do still pack my lunches and bring them to work with me…
These Oreos are going straight into my lunchbox.
