Today is National Ice Cream Day! Just like every other day of the year, you should eat some ice cream today. But because it’s National Ice Cream Day, ice cream calories are subtracted from your total for the day! You may safely consume whatever you’d like, as long as it’s ice cream.
Normally, reviews at Junk Banter cover items that have recently hit shelves for the first time. But because I wanted to lower my chances of disappointment on this, National Ice Cream Day, I hit up one of my ice cream consultants on Instagram – @icecreambuythepint. He told me that Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World, a Target exclusive, is his favorite B&J currently on the market. He owes me $5 if I hate it.
Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World features a milk chocolate base with two swirls: a peanut butter swirl and a chocolate cookie swirl. I put special emphasis on “milk” because it’s currently the only pint in their repertoire that features a milk chocolate ice cream. This was a distinction I repeatedly missed when I walked past the freezer aisle in Target every day for the last several years. As I’ve stated previously when I reviewed Ben & Jerry’s Cookies & Cream Cheesecake Core, their regular chocolate ice cream doesn’t excite me.
Failing to catch the distinction, I thought Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World sounded safe and predictable. I never purchased it because this assumption discourages dumbasses like me who want their food to be ludicrously flavored with things that barely make sense together. Nonetheless, it’s National Ice Cream Day, and I was told this one was special. Let’s see if I agree.
No joke, you’ll notice an immediate difference with the milk chocolate base featured in Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World. Whereas the regular chocolate base is dull, this one is decadent and creamier with an added sweetness that only full-fat dairy can provide. Why the hell don’t Ben & Jerry use this base in all of their chocolate flavors? Oh, it might have something to do with the whopping 340 calories per serving that this ice cream contains. But not today, it doesn’t! Give me that milk, baby.
Though the title would suggest that peanut butter would be the star, the peanut buttery swirl plays only a supporting role. Fortunately, I would nominate it for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor because what’s present layers enough salty & sweet goodness into each bite. It’s more than fair to say that some bites of Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World will call to mind Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, but just know that the balance is in milk chocolate’s favor. And since this milk chocolate base is a rarity for the company, I’m glad it plays the more prominent role. If I’m being picky on National Ice Cream Day, a crunchy peanut butter swirl could have made the peanut butter flavor more pronounced while allowing the milk chocolate ice cream to shine.
Oh yeah, there is also a swirl of crushed chocolate cookies inside of Ben & Jerry’s Peanut Butter World. The deeper cocoa flavor of the cookies becomes more significant against the sweeter milk chocolate base than it does against the standard chocolate one. Dare I say that the combination now reminds of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Oreos in ice cream form? This is especially true since those Oreos favored the chocolate too, as only the creme was intended to have some peanut butter flavor.
Welp, I just hit a thick ass glob of peanut butter and it was awesome. I can’t believe I neglected this ice cream for this many years. Safe flavors, but outstanding execution deserves some praise.
In summary, it should be called Reese’s World… but it’s damn good.
