Disclaimer: Ben & Jerry’s sent me free pints of the Topped line. Receiving free product didn’t affect my review, as I’ve poo-pooed plenty of products I received for free.
When it comes to ice cream in the freezer aisle, Ben & Jerry’s can’t be topped.
Or CAN it?!!?
Ben & Jerry’s Topped
Look, we all know the ice cream itself is great, but what keeps us coming back to Ben & Jerry’s? It’s the load of mix-ins swimming freely throughout the pint (well, maybe not freely… picture a bunch of chubby kids crashing into each other inside an inflatable pool). Ben & Jerry’s knows this too, so you know what they did? They said f*ck it, we’re not even gonna make you wait; we’re just gonna throw a bunch right on top.
Introducing Ben & Jerry’s Topped, a new line of seven loaded pints that have a layer of spoonable chocolatey ganache (and sometimes other mix-ins) greeting you immediately under the lid.
Looks like I’m gonna need a bigger inflatable swimming pool!!
This review is part of a series. Today’s Ben & Jerry’s Topped flavor is:
Ben & Jerry’s Topped – Chocolate Milk & Cookies
Ben & Jerry’s Topped Chocolate Milk & Cookies features chocolate ice cream with chocolate chip cookies & chocolate cookie swirls topped with milk chocolatey ganache & fudge chips.
Because if eating cookies with chocolate milk instead of regular milk isn’t fattening enough for you, why not wash it down with a tall glass of ganache?
The chocolatey ganache is very impressive. It’s much thicker and more decadent than the “crackly” candy shell in Magnum pints, and offers a rich and and creamy chocolate flavor. It starts out a little hard straight out of the freezer but is still spoonable, and it continues to soften further as it tempers. Bravo to B&J’s on this ganache.
The fudge chips are just kind of there for me… I’m not mad at them, but they’d probably be easier to navigate if they were mixed throughout the ice cream instead of on top.
On paper, Ben & Jerry’s Topped Chocolate Milk & Cookies is pretty much just a chocolate version of the regular Milk & Cookies with a few tweaks. The changes include:
- Chocolate ice cream replaces the vanilla.
- The chocolate chocolate chip cookies have been removed.
- The ganache and fudge flakes have been added.
Under the hood though, I find this the less desirable flavor. The only reputable criticism of the Topped Line is that there are less mix-ins throughout the pint to compensate for the large amount of ganache added. While my pint had a good amount of chocolate cookie swirls, there were simply not enough chocolate chip cookies for it to break up the chocolate overload. I only found a few chunks and they are far too small. Hopefully you’ll have better luck than I did.
At the end of the day, Ben & Jerry’s Topped Chocolate Milk & Cookies was too one dimensional for my preferences. This really could have been remedied with more chocolate chip cookies or perhaps the creamier white chocolate ganache used in some other Topped flavors.
The Ben & Jerry’s Topped line is a bona fide winner in my book, but Topped Chocolate Milk & Cookies has been one my least favorite thus far.

One dimensional is right. I found this so disappointing. The chocolate base is unacceptable. With my eyes closed I can’t even tell it’s supposed to be chocolate! Doesn’t come close to the milk and cookies flavor, which is easily one of their best.
