I sure hope whoever said peanut butter contains “healthy” fats was right, because tonight I’m going to feast on a lot of fat:
D’s Natural Fluffbutter is one of several protein-infused nut butters that have exploded in popularity amongst the fitness community. I don’t know if you’ve heard, but adding protein to anything makes it healthy. Hell, you technically don’t even need to add it. Just advertise it. I recently saw a King-Sized Baby Ruth advertising 4g of protein for the whole bar. That’s not good at all, but it’s good enough for me. Boom, health product.
Readers of the blog know that I wrote a love letter to D’s Naturals Creamy Chocolate S’mores Fluffbutter and gave it one of the only perfect 10’s I’ve ever awarded. I crave this stuff over Oreos. No, I’m being literal. I spread D’s Natural Fluffbutter atop my Oreos all the time since I first discovered them. Recall:
The S’mores Fluffbutter got me hooked, so I began working my way through all of D’s Naturals Fluffbutters since that time. Then Vitamin Shoppe gave me 5 middle fingers and casually announced five new flavors like it was nothing, knowing I would buy all of them. I did. This review costs $130 plus tax.
For first-timers, D’s Natural Fluffbutters are dairy free, soy free, gluten free, and vegan. The protein sources are rice protein and pea protein. Macros for 2 tbsp are 11P/7C/15-16F at 200-210 cals with 0-1g of sugar. They’re sweetened with monk fruit extract and stevia extract.
Without further adieu, please find my rankings of all 10 flavors below:
1) Vanilla Maple Fluffbutter (Almond): Upset alert! You were expecting to see S’mores here, weren’t you? D’s Natural Vanilla Maple Almond Fluffbutter edges it because of its versatility. One of only three almond Fluffbutters instead of peanut, the balance favors smooth vanilla over the maple. The flavor of the almonds shines through in this one with no artificial aftertaste whatsoever. I have yet to find something I didn’t enjoy spreading it on. Recommend melting over sweet potatoes. If classic Italian biscotti were crushed up into a cookie butter, that’s what D’s Natural Vanilla Maple Almond Butter tastes like. We are just a few spices away from this being a Gingerbread Cookie Butter. Why am I always thinking about cookie butters?
2) Creamy Chocolate S’mores Fluffbutter (Peanut): We’re talking 1A vs. 1B here. Did you read my love letter yet? D’s Naturals Creamy Chocolate S’mores Fluffbutter is one of the s’mores-iest foods ever released, and that includes junk food. The chocolate flavor is milky and sweet (hello Hershey’s), a mild vanilla evokes marshmallow, and a honey-like graham flavor makes an appearance to round out the trio. Spread atop Teddy Grahams, Oreos, actual s’mores, or your significant other for a guaranteed good time. The flavor is a lot more bold than the Vanilla Maple Almond Fluffbutter, so there exists the possibility that I will grow tired of it 30 years from now.
3) Raspberry Lava Cake Fluffbutter (Peanut): Safe to assume nobody saw this one coming. What I expected to be my least favorite turned out to be one of my definitive favorites. D’s Naturals Raspberry Lava Cake Fluffbutter shares a ton of similarities with the stellar S’mores Fluffbutter, but has even more intricacy from the lightly tart raspberry component. I drew two comparisons while I made love to my spoon. The first were those Jelly Ring chocolate candies that are near and dear to my barely-functioning heart. But at times, the flavor of the peanuts came through to produce something akin to a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. But not just any PB&J – one that you melted chocolate onto because you’re a savage. Don’t sleep on this one.
4) Brownie Batter Fluffbutter (Almond): In what may be a testament to how well the almond butters work with these protein nut butters, D’s Naturals Brownie Batter Fluffbutter deserves its high spot on the list. I can’t say this one tastes exactly like brownie batter, but it does taste more like chocolate fudge than milk chocolate. This is definitely the best pure chocolate Fluffbutter of the bunch. The almonds emerges through the rich cocoa flavor on this one, just as in the Vanilla Maple. Think Rocky Road without any marshmallows. Also pause and take notice: The fact that I keep comparing D’s Naturals Fluffbutters to ice cream and candy and sandwiches is a really good sign for the products’ quality and a pretty good sign that I used to be an obese teenager.
5) Tuscan Tiramisu Fluffbutter (Peanut): Okay, the fact that I’m on #5 and still think extremely highly of this product is another good sign. I wrote a review of D’s Naturals Tuscan Tiramisu Fluffbutter that I never got around to publishing, and I scored it an 8 out of 10. Growing up as a fat Italian bastard, tiramisu was a popular way to end a night dining out with family. While this might not have the same decadence of the dessert, it’s an incredibly well-balanced coffee-flavored peanut butter. There are subtle traces of cocoa here, too, but coffee and cream are the two primary flavors complementing the slightly salty peanut base. A traditional tiramisu recipe features lady fingers. Since lady fingers have never come near me in my life, I cannot confirm if they nailed this component. Moving on…
6) Salted Caramel Sundae Fluffbutter (Peanut): If you’re normally the type that prefers caramel to chocolate to hit your sugar macros for the day (1000g), D’s Naturals Salted Caramel Sundae Fluffbutter is the one for you. They really nailed this flavor as a caramel; less so as a sundae. The saltiness of the caramel flavoring folds well with peanut butter, which is typically pretty salty to begin with. What caused this one to drop in the rankings was the first sign of an off-putting aftertaste I got within the brand’s lineup. If you’ve ever taken a shot of liquid stevia straight to the tongue, it has that weirdly sweet, slightly alcoholic bite to it. Nothing that will stop me from eating the entire container five minutes ago, but worth mentioning.
7) Gooey Bananas Foster Fluffbutter (Peanut): I barely even know what bananas foster is. Though we’re all the way down here in the rankings, D’s Naturals Gooey Bananas Foster Fluffbutter is still fun as shit. I expect this one to be extremely polarizing. If you like Banana Laffy Taffy, you’re going to love this one. If you don’t, you’re going to hate it. The banana is definitely artificial but they sure as hell nailed artificial banana. Because it’s a peanut butter flavored with bananas and a candy-like sweetness, there is a serious banana fluffernutter sandwich vibe. That makes two sandwich comparisons in one review, and I highly recommend you make a Fluffbutter Fluffernutter with this flavor… a Flufferbutter.
8) Cocoa Glazed Cinnamon Roll (Peanut): So WTF happened here? From a conceptual standpoint, D’s Natural Cocoa Glazed Cinnamon Roll should have been near the top spot. From an execution standpoint, I wasn’t impressed all that much. It’s decent. Cinnamon buns should be an explosion of butter and cinnamon and sugar, and all I got was some trace amounts of pure cinnamon. It’s more bitter than I’d like, especially when paired with a cocoa flavor that isn’t that sweet either. There’s no actual cinnamon used in this recipe, which is even more perplexing. The picture on the label includes a hot cocoa with three gigantic marshmallows. Why? I think they lost sight of what this one was supposed to be. Still chocolate though.
9) Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter Fluffbutter (Almond): Look, the main reason I ranked this one all the way down here is because I am not smart enough to figure out how to eat it. Why is this mostly sold in packet form, forcing me to eat it GO-GURT style? All of the oil separated first, and then what was left was a bit dried out and stuck inside the package. So I had to cut it open, and now I’m covered in it. What I did salvage from D’s Natural Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter Fluffbutter tasted good enough but lacked complexity. The cake batter angle is just to draw you into a purchase; it just tastes like an almond butter with cocoa. It’s not as sweet nor as creamy as the S’mores Fluffbutter. Imagine a more straightforward version of the Brownie Batter, except it’s impossible to eat. Proceed with caution (napkins).
10) White Mocha Mousse Fluffbutter (Peanut): What is this even supposed to be? I can’t say that I’ve had a white chocolate mocha mousse in my life, but I feel like D’s Naturals White Mocha Mousse Fluffbutter is in the ballpark. The mocha is apparent right away, and the coffee flavor might be even stronger than in the Tiramisu Fluffbutter. But that’s part of the problem – this flavor is really, really powerful. Balance is all out of whack here. Unfortunately, it’s also the most artificial-tasting of the bunch. That liquid-stevia afterbite is particularly unpleasant with this one, and it was very chalky to me. The final strike against this flavor is that it’s the only Fluffbutter with 16g of fat instead of 15g. That final gram could very well be the difference between life and death for me. Hard pass on this one.
Welp guys, I’m still alive. Here are some generalizations I’ve learned from this review:
- The OGs generally fared better than the latest wave of releases.
- Vanilla Maple and S’mores are all you need in life, but there is something for everyone.
- Many of the new flavors have a certain aftertaste I didn’t get from the OGs.
- I’m fatter than I was this morning.
In summary, I feel like a real pile of Fluffbutter after consuming 10 different varieties of D’s Naturals Fluffbutters. I’ve consumed many brands of protein peanut butters in my “fitness” journey, and make no mistake that D’s Naturals are my favorite. Things didn’t really start to go south for me until the very bottom of this list, and they didn’t even go that far south. Highly recommend this product.
