In 2012, Peanut Butter Multigrain Cheerios debuted. You may not remember this next part because you don’t live, sleep, and breathe junk food like me, but MOMS. WERE. PISSED. They wanted Multigrain Peanut Butter Cheerios BANNED because it looked too much like regular Multi-Grain Cheerios, and small children might share their Cheerios with their little wiener friends, and some of those kids might have peanut allergies.
I’m not going to make light of the serious issue of food allergies, but c’mon. We need to teach Little Suzy not to eat Little Johnny’s Cheerios, especially because they’ve probably been in Little Johnny’s nose and butt already. We also need to teach Little Johnny not to share his food, period, because a smart boy never does.
Anyway, the Moms finally got their wish when the cereal was axed in 2016.
General Mills is making sure nobody confuses their newest Peanut Butter Cheerios with anything else they offer…
And THAT’S how it’s done, my friends. Mix them with Chocolate!
General Mills’ Chief Executive is calling their new Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios “the biggest launch we’ve had in quite some time.” In other words, a man in a suit who gets paid a lot of money finally figured out that chocolate and peanut butter taste great together.
General Mills’ Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios will compete directly with fan-favorite Reese’s Puffs, except not really because General Mills produces both cereals and really has us by the balls on this one.
Unlike most recent offerings like Strawberry Cheerios and Pumpkin Spice Cheerios that trap their flavors in glaze, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios features a powdery dust on each set of rings.
Dust has never been so delicious.
A 50-50 split by design, it’s the peanut butter that emerges as the lead flavor in Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios. The taste of roasted peanuts is prevalent in all bites, even when eating a good amount of chocolate rings. This will be familiar to you if you’ve ever had dried peanut butter powder. It’s a great complement to the whole grain oat profile of Cheerios, and notes of cocoa emerge in the background to successfully achieve the advertised flavor.
There’s just enough sweetness in here to make this yummy, though it doesn’t land as sugary as Reese’s Puffs.
In milk, Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheerios survive instead of shine. The flavors soften and while all the elements are still here, it was then that I craved more sweetness or something to make this cereal pop a bit more. These are best eaten dry before Little Johnny gets his filthy little hands on them, or with only a light serving of milk.
Chocolate Peanut Butter is a strong cereal in any event. It has a more genuine peanut butter/chocolate flavor than Reese’s Puffs, though it doesn’t taste as much like candy. There’s certainly room for both on shelves.
…until the Moms find a reason to pull these too.

Aw, no gluten-free stamp on the box?
Sadly, no. Not that I’m aware of.
