When it comes to ice cream, I don’t suffer from the problem that plagues most Americans. You know, the one where you take a pint of ice cream from your freezer, bring it to the couch, and it vanishes in a cloud of delight, shame, and regret. Poof.
You see, it’s one thing I don’t typically overindulge in. I have a freezer overflowing with it, but I like to reserve it for a few spoonfuls after dinner to satisfy my sweet tooth. Even though I eat a LOT of different ice cream, to me it’s the perfect way to finish a meal and a little bit goes a long way.
You know what I do overindulge in on occasion? Alcohol, and soon my ice cream strategy falls by the wayside. With my inhibitions thrown out the window, I have crushed many a pint of ice cream – some of which I remember, and some of which I only learn of from the empty carton serving as evidence in my garbage can (and once in my bed).
Häagen-Dazs new Spirits Collection appeals to me for a lot of reasons…
Two birds, one stone, zero f*cks given.
This review is part of a series. Today’s Häagen-Dazs Spirits is:
Häagen-Dazs Spirits Bourbon Vanilla Bean Truffle
The description from Häagen-Dazs is creamy vanilla bean ice cream studded with chocolate truffles and finished with a spicy bourbon swirl.
Of all the stiff booze in all the land, it’s bourbon that is my favorite. Not only do I think it tastes good, but it gets me drunk fast, puts hair on my chest, and makes me feel like a real man instead of a man-child who blogs about Sour Patch Kids Go-Gurt in my basement.
This ice cream won’t disappoint anyone who shares a similar sentiment to mine – regardless of where you blog about your Sour Patch Kids Go-Gurt.
What’s interesting is that the base is billed as just vanilla bean (and you’ll find specks of vanilla bean all throughout marking it as such), but you’ll also find that every bite has a bourbon-y bite to produce a uniquely delicious base, with small hints of maple syrup. Even in parts where you can’t see the bourbon swirl, you can sure as hell taste it.
For sure, Bourbon Vanilla Bean is the booziest flavor in this new Häagen-Dazs Spirits line. If you don’t like bourbon, you will not like this ice cream.
Sadly, “studded with chocolate truffles” is exaggerating how much you actually get. Their small presence is my one complaint about this ice cream because it does sometimes feel like another component is needed to prevent this pint from becoming a bit boring after a while. When you get them, though, you’ll be delighted how the crisp chocolate outside and softer interior combine nicely with vanilla & bourbon.
Ultimately – and maybe it’s just because I’m an alcoholic – I still found myself pleased with this flavor despite a weaker mix-in game.
Odds It’s Because I’m An Alcoholic Rating: 8 out of 10
Odds I’ll Chill My Bourbon with Ice Cream Instead of Ice Rating: 10 out of 10
Overall Rating: 7 out of 10
