Kellogg’s Frosted Caramel Apple Pop Tarts are back! Please find our review, originally published on September 22 2016, below:
Good news, everyone! The newest Pop Tart isn’t a soda!
Probably because they read my review of Kellogg’s Frosted Orange Crush Pop Tarts, Kellogg’s has abandoned the soda-in-pastry strategy and rolled out a new flavor that makes sense.
Kellogg’s Frosted Caramel Apple Pop Tarts leverages two ingredients they’ve used many times. In fact, I’m pretty sure Caramel Apple Pop Tarts have existed already. I did a quick search for “Apple Pop Tarts” but ended up going down a 45-minute click hole of Pop Tart trivia. Here’s a summary of what I learned:
1) One of the original four flavors of Pop Tarts was Apple Currant.
2) Other apple Pop Tart varieties have included Strudel, Pie, and Cinnamon Muffin. No caramel apple.
3) In 1964, Kellogg’s completely ran out of Pop Tarts and had to apologize to consumers.
4) In 2001, U.S. Troops dropped about 2 million Pop Tarts on Afghanistan. No toasters though.
5) In 2013, Kellogg’s had plans to release Pop Tart Flavored Vodka to the world.
Ok, so Pop Tart Vodka was an April Fool’s joke. But you’ve gotta assume someone at Kellogg’s was Pop Tart Drunk when they released the soda ones.
Here’s hoping these Kellogg’s Frosted Caramel Apple Pop Tarts right the ship.
Let’s do it dry first. I broke one in half and was delighted with the aroma of the apple filling. My first bite impressed me as well. The filling reminds me of a mashup between the Apple Cinnamon Pop Tarts and the Brown Sugar Pop Tarts. It was after the second bite that I detected the salty notes that made me think about caramel. It doesn’t have the same “entire stick of butter” flavor that caramel has, but we’re heading in the right direction.
When toasted, the Frosted Caramel Apple Pop Tarts are even better. The dough reaches it’s buttery apex, and the apple filling takes on a caramelized apple flavor. It sweetens naturally. And while we’re carmelizing shit, the flavor of the caramel emerges more strongly than ever after heating. This isn’t the same “Is there even an apple in here?” caramel apple that you might buy on the boardwalk, but it’s still delicious.
This is a flavor that just makes absolute sense for breakfast pastries. Apples combine seamlessly with dough – apple pies, apple puff pastries, apple danishes… It was the right call to let the apples shine and merely complement the flavor with brown sugar and an extra burst of salt. Maybe Kellogg’s could have gone bolder on the caramel aspect, but what I love about these is that they aren’t sickly artificial sweet. There’s a savoriness here that I wasn’t expecting. I’m glad I got it.
In summary, they should have dropped these on Afghanistan.

Late to the party, but I finally found these in a Target on New Years Eve. These were surprisingly good! I was afraid the caramel would be too CARAMEL!!!, but it was really more tart apple with a sweetness in the background. Yum!
Completely agree with you! I think they were one of the best Pop Tarts released in a long while.
