Ok, real talk for a second and then let’s eat.
You guys know I’m all about my pumpkin spice everything. Not only is it delicious, but pumpkin spice signals beautiful fall weather and football season and Christmas is coming! Give me all the pumpkin spices all the time so I can ride a three-month high that should take me all the way to the New Year.
But the cold hard truth is that pumpkin spice is often abused. I don’t want to chew pumpkin spice gum. I don’t want to drink pumpkin spice sparkling water. I’m not afraid to admit that pumpkin pie flavored potato chips aren’t good. We don’t want to eat pumpkin spice flavored dog treats, but Lord knows we have.
Let’s pump the pumpkin breaks for a second and get back on track with some good ole pumpkin spices, flour, and sugar.
Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Krispy Juniors are mini cake doughnuts of the cruller variety, flavored with pumpkin spice and covered in the infamous Krispy Kreme glaze. I don’t have access to a brick and mortar Krispy Kreme where I live, so it’s great that I can now find pumpkin donuts in a bag at the Walmart checkout aisle while I’m ringing up my .
Scouring the ingredient list of Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Krispy Juniors, my eyes were drawn to one thing. About three-quarters of the way down the list, the word “glaze” appears in bold print. It’s the only thing receiving this kind of emphasis. A single bite confirms why.
Sweet glaze is front and center on these crullers. It’s Krispy Kreme’s signature and it doesn’t disappoint. It’s the kind of glaze that makes you both ashamed and proud of your life simultaneously. You chose something bad for you today, but you still made a wise choice. The stiff glaze is like a thin candy shell that gives way to a softer cake donut.
Continuing my perusal through the ingredient list, I noticed that no spices are identified. In fact, the word “spice” fails to make an appearance as well. But science prevails yet again, because Krispy Kreme Pumpkin Spice Krispy Juniors have a modest pumpkin spice flavoring layered underneath all that glaze. It’s more cinnamon than nutmeg, ginger, etc., but this flavor still serves as a fine complement to the glazed donut. Most pumpkin spice products earn their merit through the spices over the sugar – these donuts are the opposite.
While bolder spices (perhaps some actual ones) might have brought the crullers to another stratosphere, there’s no denying that these donuts are damn delicious.

I read this last night in Cara Nicoletti’s book Voracious and thought of you :). Not sure if you have tried this; I’d never thought of it.
“My dad’s breakfast specialty hinged on the old-fashioned donut, which may be why I hold such a special place in my heart for it. In our house, there was always a box of Entenmann’s old-fashioned donuts in the cabinet, and if we were lucky enough to catch my dad before he went to work, he would carefully split one half for us, toast it, and slather it with salted butter. I mentioned this to a friend recently, thinking it was normal, and she was horrified, but I stand with my dad on this one. After a quick round in the toaster oven, even thise packaged donuts came to life – suddenly all burned-sugar edges and bone-warming nutmeg, salty butter pooling in every imperfection that the factory had somehow failed to smooth over.”
