If I asked you whether or not they already made a Chocolate Toaster Strudel – because these are the kinds of conversations I spark in real life – surely you’d say yes, right?
Well, joke’s on you, dumbass… it was a trick question.
You see, way back when (somewhere around Y2K), Pillsbury began making a Chocolate Toaster Strudel. This continued for who gives a shit how many years, and then they vanished. Check out this poor woman asking Pillsbury on Facebook in 2013 what happened to her beloved Chocolate Toaster Strudel. Then there’s this Change.org petition clamoring for their return – which never reached the 1,000 required signatures in order to successfully accomplish absolutely nothing. In 2009, someone even resorted to asking Yahoo! Answers when they were discontinued, to which one smartass responded “yesterday.”
In more recent years, Pillsbury obliged by taunting these sorry souls with a LIMITED EDITION Chocolate Toaster Strudel, which is like… the dumbest LTO flavor ever, because chocolate is and will always be “Forever Edition.”
Pillsbury Hershey’s Chocolate Toaster Strudel
Finally, finally, finally, Pillsbury is bringing back Chocolate Toaster Strudel with authority. The new version is made with Hersey’s Cocoa but also uses a chocolate pastry, which I’m pretty certain is a first for Toaster Strudel.
“Great as a Snack!”, these new Chocolate Toaster Strudels proclaim as if to say they’re a horrible breakfast option for you and your children.
The chocolate frosting is for sure one of their best. It tastes of a deep dark chocolate fudge sweetened to “great as a snack!” degrees. It’s thick and is probably the exact same thing as the Pillsbury Chocolate Fudge cake frosting, but I suspect it would be a killer ingredient in some kind of Brownie Batter Toaster Strudel.
The rest of the Toaster Strudel I struggle with. The cocoa-based pastry lacks the finer, buttery elements of a regular Toaster Strudel, and when heated it kind of just tastes like bland toasted cocoa.
The filling of Chocolate Toaster Strudel is better, but also doesn’t present as much contrast as I suspect it might of had the regular pastry been used. It feels a little redundant with the chocolate topping (where I think most of the chocolate flavor is coming from), and surprisingly isn’t as sweet as I expected.
With a chocolate-on-chocolate-IN-chocolate profile, I begin to compare this Toaster Strudel to things it’s not – like real food. I can’t help but feel a bowl of chocolate ice cream or a double chocolate chunk cookie would satisfy a chocolate craving much better than these toaster pastries.
If Pillsbury ever discontinues this, I can’t see myself (or anyone) writing a desperate Facebook post begging for a return.

The originals (Y2K edition) had the regular pastry, didn’t it? I always wondered where they went, as they were my favorite, obviously didn’t write a FB post about it… my mom bought some of these new ones so of course I went right skippy over there to toast one for my “2 year old” (myself) and immediately was disappointed with the chocolate pastry! Regular would have been better!
You’re totally right! I liked the idea of them doubling down on chocolate for these. The regular pastry with chocolate icing was a limited edition this past winter and I’ve actually still seen it hanging around some local groceries (like Weis Markets here in Maryland). Agreed, it’s the better option.
