In my quest to eat every single food as an Oreo, I’m willing to experiment with things that aren’t even Oreos but are close enough. Plenty of companies offer knockoff Oreos in their standard chocolate and vanilla cookies & cream combination, but only one of these companies is crazy enough to try it with random shit like mango. That company is Trader Joe’s, and the crazy knockoff Oreos are Trader Joe’s Mango Joe-Joe’s.
I was pretty certain that Trader Joe’s Mango Joe-Joe’s would be the closet thing to Mango Oreos that the world would ever see, until I found out that Mango/Orange Oreos already exists (or has existed) in China. Since I don’t plan to begin my Global Oreo Tour until I’m retirement age, Trader Joe’s Mango Joe-Joe’s will have to do for now.
For those of you who don’t follow food as religiously as I do, Trader Joe’s has fully committed to the mango for the summer of 2016. Believe it or not, Trader Joe’s Mango Joe-Joe’s are one of the least weird products to get the mango treatment. Since I have no plans to review the mango body butter, I thought I’d start with some cookies.
When I reviewed another limited edition Joe-Joe, Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Joe-Joe’s, I didn’t think they nailed the pumpkin flavor in the creme. My God how that is not the case with Trader Joe’s Mango Joe-Joe’s. This soft, fluffy creme tastes like straight mango juice, and it’s absolutely freaking delicious. It’s nearly as sweet as the actual fruit, and one can argue a side of whipped cream. I would love to spread this creme atop a yellow cake or all over my sexual partner if I ever had one. If the mango body butter is just this creme, I would buy out the place. The authenticity is remarkable. Whatever adjectives you would use to describe the flavor of fresh mangoes, insert them here.
To parallel their commitment to mango across the entire store, Trader Joe’s went HAM when designing these cookies. The recipe uses mango puree, mango powder, and natural mango flavor. And that’s not just for the creme; the cookie wafers are flavored with mango as well. I was able to detect it rounding out each bite, and it was a nice touch albeit a faint one.
My bigger criticism with the cookie wafers is that they’re a bit floury and not sweetened to the point I’d prefer. It could stand for a little more butter or salt or calories or something. They weren’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, and the mango creme is able to shine brightly up against this mostly neutral cookie. But since it’s been exactly 24 hours since I last had an Oreo, I couldn’t help but wonder how Trader Joe’s outstanding mango creme would fare in between two Golden Oreo wafers.
In summary, Trader Joe’s and Nabisco should tag team this bitch.
