Look, even Babe Ruth struck out every once in a while…
Trader Joe is one of the best in the game at nearly everything. But his ice cream? Not exactly batting 1.000 with me. Trader Joe’s Jingle Jangle ice cream was perhaps the most disappointing product of 2016, after all.
You don’t bench Babe Ruth after one bad game.
Quality performers like Babe Ruth and Trader Joe have earned the right to play through their slumps because when they bust out of it, the payoff is huge. You just send Babe Ruth right back into the batter’s box and you eat every single ice cream that he makes until you’re physically incapable of playing the sport.
Trader Joe’s Peppermint Joe-Joe’s ice cream! Just like Jingle Jangle, the description will make you drool: a blend of vanilla and peppermint ice creams, the vanilla mixed with Candy Cane Joe-Joe cookies and the peppermint mixed with a chocolate fudge swirl.
Let’s break this review into two halves. First, the cookies & cream half. The vanilla ice cream immediately earns points for having more flavor than the flavorless “nothing-flavored” ice cream in Jingle Jangle. But I will stop short of saying that it’s a strong vanilla ice cream. It’s pretty mediocre by my standards, with only a moderate amount of vanilla coming through on each bite.
The Candy-Cane Joe-Joe’s are the tastiest component in this container by a long shot. My hopes were high when I got a large cookie chunk early into the container, but my excitement dissipated quickly. I dug through at least 3/4ths of the ice cream and only found a nominal amount of crushed Joe-Joe’s. Most were so small that I only got the chocolate wafer flavor out of them – very little creme. This is a huge problem because the most mint flavor inside this container is coming from that creme inside those Candy Cane Joe-Joe’s – when you’re fortunate enough to discover it. On a related note…
The peppermint half of Trader Joe’s Peppermint Joe-Joe’s Ice cream is simply not minty enough for me. The vanilla ice cream tastes more like vanilla than the peppermint ice cream tastes like mint, if that helps put things in perspective. That’s not a good thing for an ice cream whose major selling point is both mint & cookies. The dark chocolate fudge swirl is thin, scarce, and lacking decadence. When you do get it, the swirl makes the peppermint half taste even less like mint and more like plain chocolate ice cream. Disappointing if you ask me.
While it’s certainly the better of the two winter seasonals, Trader Joe’s Peppermint Joe-Joe’s ice cream is far from a must-buy. Everything blends together to form a passable cookies & creme ice cream that fails to deliver on its promise of peppermint. While he does so many things right, perhaps ice cream is the one hole in Trader Joe’s game.
In summary, Babe Ruth struck out 1,330 times in his career.
