Ohhh the wonderful mini donut. Regular donuts are fantastic and delicious, but come with a hefty penalty being that they are straight sugar poison. But mini donuts! Food this small and adorable gets tacked right into the “oh, that does even’t count” category, and their calories round down to zero as a result. The beauty is in the math:
0 calories x 50 mini donuts = 0 calories
You can eat as many mini donuts as you want and not get fat, because of simple math! Tonight we’re going to not get fat by eating as many Tasty Gingerbread Mini Donuts & Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts as we can handle.
The last time I went HAM on Tastykake Mini Donuts was with Tastykake Pumpkin Spice Mini Donuts and Tastykake Caramel Apple Mini Donuts. I wasn’t pleased. Because I will never learn my lesson and I am constantly hungry, I have no reservations about giving Tastykake Gingerbread and Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts a shot. They’re “winter edition,” and I’m not willing to let anything limited edition pass me by on the off chance that it’s the best food ever created. It’s a dangerous rule to live by, but I swear by it.
Tastykake Gingerbread Mini Donuts contain 50,000 ingredients including cinnamon (much higher on the list) and ginger (much lower on the list). Texturally and aesthetically, they’re your typical powdered sugar donut. The dough is compact, a little tough, and a bit dry, but nothing altogether unusual for packaged donuts.
Tastykake Gingerbread Mini Donuts are very heavy on cinnamon and taste awfully familiar. The ginger presence is mild initially. It starts to build as you eat more mini donuts (which you will), and it’s just enough to differentiate it from a straight cinnamon donut. The lack of allspice and clove additions that are necessary for an authentic gingerbread cookie flavor is glaring.
The donuts are still enjoyable though – I like that they’re not cloying because it allows the cinnamon/ginger to remain at the forefront. And it’s a blessing in disguise that I have no desire to eat 50 of these Tastykake Gingerbread Mini Donuts – just a few.

Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts contain a comparably long list of ingredients, of which Red Dye #40 is the only thing other than “artificial flavor” that makes this a “red velvet” product. Will this be a similar let down like all the typical fake red velvet products I’ve tried?
Oh, HELL NO. These are shockingly good.
Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts are more moist and less rubbery than the Gingerbread Mini Donuts. The red velvet flavor they achieved with the laundry list of ingredients ought to be commended. The sweetened, rich cocoa presence is huge, and it’s not the only flavor node present. The plentiful white confectioner’s sugar so perfectly balances the bitter cocoa. You know that “tang” that a real red velvet slice of cake has, whether it be from buttermilk or a cream cheese frosting? Tastykake nailed it. A little bit of vanilla, too.
I will have eaten four more Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts by the time I put the period on this sentence, and it will be a struggle not to eat more. Good thing these are zero calories. Tastykake Red Velvet Mini Donuts may be the best mass-produced red velvet recreation I’ve had from any junk food, no matter how much partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and thiamin mononitrate they contain.
