This food-hunting business is no joke. Trust me, I know it better than just about anyone. All of these wonderful limited edition flavors are scattered about the land – some exclusive to stores you’ve never heard of, others hiding in random end caps facing the pet care products for some reason.
With ice cream, the hunt is a little easier. At least you KNOW you have to look in the frozen aisle. But most stores don’t get the limited edition flavors with any predictability. And when they do? Tenacious food hunters like me scoop them so quickly you would never know they existed.
Let’s assume you can’t find Talenti Pumpkin Pie, my perfect 10 in the frozen pumpkin game. After all, I had to use the company’s product locator to finally track it down far away from my house, and then I had to flirt with an elderly lady in the seafood department just to get it home safely (don’t ask).
Or how about Ben & Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake, a 9.5 out of 10? You might have trouble finding it unless you look in my freezer where I’ve hoarded the 2016 supply.
If you repeatedly fail to find these products, I’ve got good news for you. Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie is in the same tier.
Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie Ice Cream features a pumpkin flavored ice cream and a cinnamon graham cracker swirl. The first things you’ll notice about the ice cream is that it’s lighter in body and a little more “stretchy” than the Ben & Jerry’s Pumpkin Cheesecake. While I missed the full fatness of the B&J counterpart, this lighter base is remarkably pumpkin pie. Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves… it’s all here in careful balance. The spices combine with real pumpkin puree to offer a product incredibly reminiscent of pumpkin pie filling. The smoother, lighter flavor made me think of pumpkin pie served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. And it clocks in at 90 less calories per serving, if you’re into that sorta thing.
But what makes Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie so special is this cinnamon graham cracker swirl. It is the most cinnamon-y swirl in the game, and Turkey Hill gave me so much I couldn’t see straight. The swirl is such a perfect combination of cinnamon and sugar that it almost tastes like a churro turned into a pie crust. The swirl is dense with a mighty grit, but it still manages to fold seamlessly throughout the pumpkin base. Sounds amazing, right? It is divine and it is dangerous.
While nothing can top the accuracy of the Talenti Pumpkin Pie gelato, the total package offered by Turkey Hill Pumpkin Pie is extraordinary. No off-the-shelf competitor includes a swirl so plentiful in quantity and so potent in flavor. If you hit the pumpkin jackpot and find all three, buy all three. Then make the world’s most glorious milkshake and thank me later.
