When it comes to food, it takes a lot to frighten me. I’ve eaten a lot of scary shit for this blog. Take , for example, which never required a review to know they’d taste foul. Or how about Deep Fried Twinkies? They made my heart beat rapidly with the threat of death just looking at them. And then there was Swedish Fish Oreos, a nightmare so great that I can no longer eat cookies in my sleep.
Considering my resume, these new White Boo-tterscotch M&M’s don’t scare me at all.
Why should they? Butterscotch tastes great, according to Grandmas everywhere. Don’t get me wrong: I think butterscotch tastes great too. I’m just not allowed to eat it because I’m not seventy. The elderly have butterscotch on complete lockdown. I can’t even remember the last I saw butterscotch unless Grandma decided to share. I look forward to the day I’m old enough to enjoy it legally on my own.
In case you were wondering, I’m thirty years old. How’s this junk food blog for a midlife crisis?
White Boo-tterscotch M&M’s are exactly what they sound like except for the whole “boo-tterscotch” not being a real word thing. These are M&M’s made with white chocolate and flavored with butterscotch. The pairing is a unique one for sure. But M&M’s with white chocolate usually do a better job of featuring the advertised flavor than milk chocolate varieties, so I suspect it was the right choice. This might be the closest I get to butterscotch for another forty years.
Well, turns out one thing is scary: how much these taste like butterscotch! Remarkable. White chocolate may be the first ingredient, but you’ll taste distinct butterscotch right off the bat. They taste exactly like those chewy butterscotch candies without all that disgusting chewiness. It’s nice to experience this flavor with the hard candy coated shell instead of the normal stickiness that I find cumbersome.
The butterscotch flavor is intense and immediate, but gives way to a creamy white chocolate note. The deep, buttery butterscotch actually serves to temper some of the excessive sweetness inherent to Mars’ white chocolate. In a lot of ways, this reminded me of butterscotch sauce on top of vanilla ice cream. The flavor might be a bit too much for some, but it should sit well with butterscotch fans. You shouldn’t be buying these if you don’t like butterscotch. Mars nailed this flavor better than any they’ve attempted previously. It deserves praise.
In summary, I ain’t ‘fraid of no ghosts…

would be nice if they got the crunchy butterscotch center. Something new center than the standard nut, pretzel, or crispy centers
I just like the fact that butterscotch is a new flavor rather than the usual standards that we have been seeing. Thanks for the heads up, I do miss that flavor and this is another that may fit well with protein bars, cereals, etc…
