“At Ben & Jerry’s, we believe the world is sweetest when we stand together as one.”
Well, I agree but I’m having a hard time standing period with all this ice cream they’re feeding me…
Ben & Jerry’s One Sweet World…
Ben & Jerry’s is not shy about taking strong political stands on issues they care about. Many would say that ice cream and politics don’t mix, but quite frankly I think that ice cream mixes well with just about everything. Case in point, I once mixed ice cream with spaghetti.
With One Sweet World, Ben & Jerry’s is asking us to join together in digging deeper to understand issues of racial justice in America. They’ve set up a website at benjerry.com/digdeeper where you can learn more if you choose. And while I don’t intend to use my Twinkie review blog to express my political opinions, suffice to say:
- Don’t be a racist.
- Don’t tolerate racism.
- Ice cream is the best.
The only thing I’ve ever discriminated against was some marshmallows, and even that got me into some trouble when 250,000 marshmallow maniacs wanted my head to roll.
I’ve since softened my stance on marshmallows (consider it a learning experience), which is a good thing because this ice cream has PLENTY of it.
Ben & Jerry’s One Sweet World is coffee caramel ice cream with fudge chunks and swirls of marshmallow & salted caramel. It’s awfully similar in both name and design to Ben & Jerry’s One Sweet Whirled – the Dave Matthews Band flavor which lived from 2002-2004. This iteration was first released in Europe last year but has made the transatlantic voyage to the States. It’s essentially Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food, but swaps the chocolate ice cream with a new caramel coffee one.
The coffee caramel ice cream is tasty indeed. It’s a sweeter, milkier version of their normal coffee ice cream; the caramel component makes it less bitter, though overall the coffee flavor is more pronounced than the caramel.
And that’s a good thing, because we have some nice pools of salted caramel to wade through in One Sweet World. This adds an enjoyable buttery element in addition to more sugar. My one criticism is that salted caramel should be saltier than this.
The most copious mix-in is the marshmallow swirl, which adds a mellow sweetness to the caramel’s sharper sweetness. One sweet world indeed.
The ampersand-shaped fudge pieces combine with the coffee to give a definite mocha flavor to some bites. If you frequently find yourself torn between a Caramel Macchiato or a Mocha Frappuccinno, then this may be the ice cream for you.
So everything about Ben & Jerry’s One Sweet World is good, but nothing is exactly great. The base ice cream is solid and I love the softer, stickier consistency of the marshmallow swirl. However, the marshmallow doesn’t stand out against coffee as effectively as it does against chocolate (like in Phish Food). The marshmallow and multiple caramel components all kind of blend together. As one.
OH I GET IT NOW.
