It’s only fitting that our first official review is a limited edition Oreo product.
Nabisco, understanding fully that I will buy anything with “Limited Edition” on the package, has been pumping out new Oreo varieties at an alarming clip these past few years. In 2015 alone, we’ve seen the debuts of Red Velvet, Cotton Candy, S’mores, Chocolate Lemon Twist, and Key Lime Pie. We know Brownie Batter is coming, and it’s only July. Their strategy has bordered on madness.
Many limited edition Oreos are taken out to the woodshed and retired. In 2015, however, Nabisco continued their descent into madness and resurrected several varieties to include the incredible Reese’s Oreos, the somewhat-disappointing Cookie Dough Oreos, and the deeply puzzling Cookies & Creme Oreos. Some varieties deserve to remain in the limited edition Hell I am certain they were sent to (I’m looking at you, Fruit Punch Oreos). But there was one variety this junk food idiot hoped would receive a much-deserved curtain call:
MARSHMALLOW CRISPYYYYYYY!!!
When I stumbled across these on a routine grocery store trip without any knowledge they were coming back, my excitement level would be shocking if it weren’t expected from someone that runs a junk food blog. Marshmallow Crispy Oreos were released in February 2014. I foolishly only ate one cookie when they were released because I was on an extreme fitness regimen. Man oh man did I love that single cookie.
Because I have since employed a more relaxed diet, I’m eager to see if they live up to my glorious memories.
Oh My God… Good Lord! These are even better than I remembered!
Marshmallow Crispy Oreos need to be a regular Oreo offering. The marshmallow crispy flavored creme is a masterful representation of Rice Krispie Treats. The addition of the subtle vanilla from the golden Oreo cookie is the perfect complement and gives them a more unique flavor profile that squashes the argument: “Well, why not just eat a Rice Krispie Treat?” The vanilla doesn’t overpower like it does for some other Oreo varieties.
The crispy pieces inside the creme do get a bit lost because of the super crunchy cookie, but they are still a fun addition because CRISPYYY! If I had to nitpick to remain objective, the only knock against them is that they might be super sweet for some. The sugar overload leaves a little burn in the throat, but the aftertaste is still so pleasant that I can and will stomach it easily. I like that kind of sweetness in my crispies.
Well done, Nabisco. I want to eat these at my funeral (what?).
