Yabba Dabba D-aaaamn, son!
The Flinstones may have been cancelled from television in 1966, but dammit, they still make a good breakfast in 2018. Joining Fruity, Cocoa, Marshmallow Fruity, and Cinnamon Pebbles on shelves are brand new Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles – the third new Pebbles cereal in as many years (the fourth if you include 2015’s Ice Cream Pebbles, which we will not).
Peanut Butter is an impressively smart choice… especially coming from someone whose adopted son-in-law surely bashed his head in more than a few times.
On top of that, the Flinstones even cater to modern-day dietary preferences by throwing it back to their prehistoric roots, as Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles are surely Paleo because they contain peanuts.*
Just like Fruity Pebbles is Paleo, because fruit!**
The Flinstones were truly ahead of their time.
Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles are sweetened rice puffs made with real peanut butter and cocoa, as well as fake peanut butter and chocolate flavors, as well as caramel color, and BHT to preserve freshness.
The head on this cereal is more peanut butter than it is cocoa, which is exactly what I wanted from it.
Though a more subtle affair than Reese’s Puffs, Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles impress me with their authenticity. The peanut butter flavor is light but accurate, with just enough sugar to make it generally satisfying overall. When eaten dry, the balance of flavors is true to the aroma with peanut butter favoring cocoa.
However, eating dry Pebbles is a logistical nightmare, so milk is the way to go.
Unfortunately, milk holds this cereal back from its best self. Flavor fading occurs – especially with the peanut butter part of the equation. It’s not all bad news as the milk left behind is tasty, even as sweetened chocolate becomes the more prominent flavor. But the fact of the matter is that these don’t stack up too favorably against powerhouse competition like Reese’s Puffs and Peanut Butter Chocolate Blasted Shreds.
If you like Cocoa Pebbles, surely you’ll enjoy Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles to some degree. My best advice is to consume this with only a splash a milk; it preserves the most flavor and prevents the sogginess that plagues all Pebbles. If you’re heavy-handed on the milk, you’ll have to eat this quicker than Barney Rubble trying to escape another brutal beatdown from his adopted son.
That pesky, free-swinging son-of-a-bitch.
*** Peanut Butter & Cocoa Pebbles are in no way, shape, or form Paleo. They’re made with high processed cereal grains and refined sugars, which will literally kill you on a Paleo diet. Please consult a registered dietician (or anyone but me) for diet advice.
