*Updated: Pumpkin Spice Oreos have returned to store shelves! These Oreos debuted in 2014 and have returned each fall since. If you’ve been following Junk Banter at all, 1) get a life and 2) you probably guessed I would love these Oreos.
Please find the original review republished below with pictures of the new packaging for 2017. While the graphics now include a picture of pumpkin pie instead of the pumpkin on previous packaging, they taste identical to prior years.
This is an emotional review for me. The two food loves of my life – pumpkins and Oreos – combined forces in fall 2014 when Nabisco created the Pumpkin Spice Oreo.
Background: I’ve had an ongoing love affair with Pumpkin Spice since before white girls even existed. My obsession with hunting down and being amongst the first to try new limited edition Oreos is a huge reason this blog exists. While it was free money to bet on Nabisco eventually releasing Pumpkin Spice Oreos, the miniature pumpkin that has replaced my brain nearly exploded when they were announced. Much of it was excitement, but I also had a crippling fear that these would be a colossal disappointment.
I conquered my fears. In a pure display of heroism, I ate some cookies. I thought they were excellent! I was ecstatic that Nabisco delivered, but back then? I was just a nobody eating Oreos on the toilet. I wasn’t the big shot junk food blogger that I am today.
I’m worried that I’ll eat these Pumpkin Spice Oreos with a higher degree of scrutiny and not love them like I once did. But I must conquer my fears yet again because you people are animals and demand my opinion on pumpkin-spiced everything (does anybody even read this thing?)
Hahaha, boy what was I so worried about? These Pumpkin Spice Oreos are great! Just stop reading this (nobody is reading this) and go buy them right now.
The pumpkin spices aren’t the most intense but they produce a damn good cookie overall. The cream is mostly cinnamon and nutmeg flavored, with elements of the traditional Oreo creme blended in. The spice flavors make this cream rightfully less sweet than most Oreo varieties. Truth be told, the cream merely suggests “pumpkin” instead of screaming it.
Results are amplied when you stop licking the cream like a savage and eat the cookie as intended. The golden vanilla wafer provides a great sugary backdrop for the pumpkin spice cream to pop. This is typical Oreo magic; everything comes together with outstanding balance. The end result is a delightful little pumpkin treat that should satisfy anyone who shares the same pumpkin and Oreo fetishes that I do.
Pumpkin Spice Oreos aren’t going to make you think “pumpkin pie” – they taste like a Golden Oreo with a mild pumpkin flare. I appreciate this nuance (the best of both worlds), and so should you.
Maybe next year Nabisco can get a little crazy and use the graham wafers from the S’mores Oreos and Key Lime Pie Oreos to properly emulate a pumpkin pie experience. But for now? I’ll gladly rent out real estate in my Pumpkin Spice Shame Closet to ten packages of Pumpkin Spice Oreos.
My Pumpkin Spice Shame Closet Rating: 9 out of 10
My Fact Checking On When White Girls Were Invented Rating: 0 out of 10
Overall Rating: 8 out of 10

Have not tried these yet! Do you wish the Oreos were “pumpkin pie” instead of “pumpkin spice?” In my experience pumpkin spice products don’t have the flavor of pumpkin all that much. To its defense the flavor of “pumpkin spice” is not supposed to have actual pumpkin in it because pumpkin spice is an actual blend of spices. I think way to much about these things…
I’m all good with them not going for pumpkin pie, but the graham cookie could be a fun twist next year. You’ve eaten pumpkin puree by itself before, yeah? It wouldn’t make a very good flavor on it’s own. Pumpkin spice is usually referring to the spice blend we typically add to pumpkin pie, without the added sugar. Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, gloves, & allspice. Too many people freak out about a lack of real pumpkin, which they’ve probably never eaten pumpkin straight up.
Completely agree!! I wonder how many people actually realize what straight up pumpkin tastes like! For instance people were going crazy when they realized the old PSL didn’t have any pumpkin. But it was never claiming to have tea pumpkin because of the name “pumpkin spice”
The outrage over PSL’s lack of pumpkin is exactly what I was referring to. I think Starbucks used pumpkin puree for natural coloring just to squash the outrage. It might add a little creaminess as well, so I appreciate the change but it wasn’t exactly necessary.
Completely agree!! I’m so happy someone else understands!! 🙂
I have to agree I was a bit disappointed when I got these today too … I expected a bit more “pumpkiny” flavour to these … But I’m still happy to finally get to try these bad boys 😉
Hi! To each their own, Crystal Pistol… Oreos are one product I didn’t want to be super pumpkin spicy. I wanted these to taste like Oreos with pumpkin spice undertones. Would I have enjoyed this more if the wafers were pumpkin spice flavored too? Probably. But would they have felt like Oreos? I’m not so sure… To me, these are great as is. Thanks for commenting!
