Milkshake ice cream… is there anything more meta?
Funny you should ask. Here’s a collection of the most meta things I’ve reviewed on this site:
- Butter-flavored Ritz crackers.
- Even Thinner Wheat Thins.
- Oreo-flavored Oreos.
- (I also once topped a pizza bagel with a slice of pizza, but that one’s on me.)
So yeah, there are definitely more meta junk foods than this new Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Shake It Truffles…but none of them sounded quite this good.
To be fair, this is more than just a milkshake flavored ice cream. It’s chocolate malt milkshake ice cream with chocolate cookie-covered fudge truffles & marshmallow swirls. But this exact combo feels a bit out of left field for Ben & Jerry’s, which gives me hope that they just nailed a flavor they were super proud of and decided to roll with it.
Not like the time we actually voted for Oreo-flavored Oreos, which I will never forgive you people for.
The chocolate malt ice cream – which sounds rather innocent – is actually devilishly good. It’s a smooth, creamy chocolate flavor (almost like sweetened cocoa powder) with that slightly roasted quality you might associate with Whoppers candy. I like it more than their regular chocolate base, more than the vanilla malt base in Chubby Hubby, and more than caramel malt base in Keep Caramel & Cookie On. Really well done.
Ben & Jerry’s Chocolate Shake It Truffles also has that thick, quality marshmallow swirl that the brand is so proficient with. It offers a different kind of sweetness present in the chocolate malt ice cream – a more poignant one. It’s good, old-fashioned fun, though the sum of the two parts isn’t especially greater than it sounds.
Or worse, if you’re weird and don’t like those things.
Where I think a bit of failing occurs is with the chocolate cookie-covered fudge truffles. The truffles just don’t taste “fudgey” as you’d expect them to; it’s more like a semi-sweet, dry cocoa flavor. Truth be told, I rather the fudge flakes that the company most commonly offers.
The chocolate cookies that coat the truffles are just thin flakes of chocolate that don’t change anything for better or worse.
It’s appropriate that I opened this review focusing on the milkshake ice cream and its meta nature, because the malted chocolate base is the reason to buy this ice cream. The truffles that are in the title? Not so much.
Maybe Ben & Jerry’s should have doubled down on meta and put the butter-flavored Ritz in here.
